6. Start the Circulation

Open both of the small T-handles on the service ports (parallel to the port). Plug in the pump. The pump will now pull vinegar from the bucket, push it through the cold inlet, through the heat exchanger, out the hot outlet, and back into the bucket.

  • Run the pump for 45 to 90 minutes. If your unit hasn't been serviced in years, aim for the full 90 minutes.

7. Flush with Fresh Water

Turn off and remove the pump from the bucket. Discard the used vinegar (which may now look cloudy or blue/green).

  • Keep the hot water hose in the bucket.
  • Close the cold water service port T-handle.
  • Open the main cold water inlet valve to allow fresh house water to flow through the unit and out of the hot service port into the bucket.
  • Flush for 5 minutes or about 15–20 gallons to remove all vinegar traces.

8. Clean the Filter

Most units have a small plastic "inlet screen" or filter near the cold water intake. Unscrew it, rinse off any grit or pebbles under a faucet, and screw it back in.

9. Return to Service

  • Close all service port T-handles and replace the brass caps.
  • Open the main hot water outlet valve.
  • Turn the gas valve back on.
  • Plug the unit back into power.
  • Run a hot water tap in the house for a minute to bleed out any remaining air.
